VPS Hosting: Technical FAQs
What is Parallels Power Panel?
The Power Panel is an online facility from which you can reboot your VPS.
Can we set up our own nameservers? If so, are there any charges associated with this?
Yes you are welcome to setup your own nameservers on your VPS. This is recommended particularly if you are using CPanel software.
Can I use your nameservers instead of running my own?
Absolutely. We include a web facility to add domain names and manage zone data which are serviced by CriticalOps nameservers.
Is there anything I can't install on the VPS?
It is possible to install any software on a VPS. Of course we cannot guarantee that every piece of software created will work, nevertheless, unless your software needs to recompile the kernel, it should be fine. The exception to this is software created in server-side JAVA (E.g Tomcat) or any other software which can be highly CPU intensive (E.g. MS Exchange) and inappropriate in a VPS environment.
My current site is hosted under some OS other than CentOS, and I would like to know if you offer that OS or only CentOS?
We currently only support Windows and CentOS. You will find that CentOS is a stable Linux distribution and highly compatible with many other versions of Linux.
How are backups executed?
Each night a snapshot is taken of your VPS and stored on our RAID Storage Area Network. This takes place on a segregated Gigabit network. We do not keep generations of backups within the basic VPS product. If you have advanced requirements for backups you are welcome to contact us and we are able to customize a solution for you.
